Tooth extractions are a simple dental procedure performed right in our office. Although our goal is always to save your child’s natural teeth whenever possible, there are times when the only way to restore oral health is to remove a tooth that is painful, broken, or infected.

The Tooth Extraction Process

The entire extraction procedure usually takes under 30 minutes to complete. If needed, your child will be given nitrous oxide sedation to help them relax before we begin any work. Local anesthetic is used to numb the affected tooth and the surrounding tissue to ensure your child feels no pain during the procedure.

Once your child is calm and comfortable, we use a tool called an elevator to loosen the tooth from the jawbone by gently rocking it back and forth. Then, the tooth is carefully removed with forceps. We’ll ask your child to bite down on gauze in order to help a blood clot form, which is the first step to healing from an extraction.

We’ll provide you and your child with instructions to follow after the procedure to ensure a quick, complication-free recovery. If the extracted tooth was a baby tooth, we will discuss the possibility of a space maintainer. Permanent teeth are typically replaced with bridges in pediatric patients, although a dental implant may be a possibility for older teens who have finished growing.
