Average Cost of Teeth Cleaning for A Child in Vero Beach, FL

Team Pediatric Dentistry

If your child is included on your dental insurance plan, twice-yearly cleanings are likely covered by insurance. If you do not have insurance, look for specials or membership plans to make dental cleanings affordable. Some pediatric dentists also offer complimentary examinations for children under the age of two.  If you do not use a coupon or join a pediatric dentist’s membership club, you can expect the cost for a comprehensive exam with cleaning and x-rays to begin at $299 and up.

Why Does My Child Need to See a Dentist Twice a Year?

Beginning when your child’s first tooth erupts, or by the time they celebrate their birthday, all children should see a dentist. Early dental care can set your child up for a lifetime of good oral health. Even children who practice excellent dental habits at home, still need regular cleanings. This is because, despite excellent brushing technique, there remains some plaque on the teeth which needs to be removed to prevent tartar and decay.

Twice yearly cleanings also give you the greatest chance to treat small problems before they become large problems. Deep grooves in the teeth that may be prone to cavities can be protected with dental sealants.  Digital x-rays can be used to identify any abnormalities invisible to the naked eye.  Cavities can be caught in their earliest stages, and treated before the decay can spread.

Seeing the dentist twice a year for a cleaning and oral exam can also help shorten the duration of orthodontic treatment later, as your dentist can recommend an early intervention that may expand the size of your child’s jaw to accommodate all teeth. Likewise, your dentist may identify treatable problems with your child’s breathing that can lead to crooked teeth, teeth grinding, and more.

What to Expect When You Take Your Child to the Dentist for a Cleaning

When you take your child to the dentist for a cleaning, you wind up getting much more than you bargained for–in a good way! Comprehensive oral examinations are provided before cleaning. These include digital imaging and an examination of the bite. Your pediatric dentist will also be looking for any tissue abnormality or problems.

If your child is especially fearful, sedation dentistry may be available. In most cases, laughing gas is all that is required to help fearful children to relax enough for cleaning. Laughing gas is nitrous oxide, a fast-acting, safe, mild form of sedation. The side effects of laughing gas wear off immediately, so your child can return to normal activities after their appointment.

Fluoride treatment will typically also be recommended, and this painless procedure follows a cleaning. The gel, foam, or varnish is applied to the surface of your child’s teeth to protect and strengthen the enamel.

Young children will also receive education on how to brush properly, and why they need to make good oral hygiene a priority. Dentists and hygienists will demonstrate and may ask your child to mimic their examples. Many times children will leave with a new toothbrush, sticker, or another small treat.
