Frequently Asked Questions About Pediatric Dentistry

What is the difference between a dentist and a pediatric dentist?

A pediatric dentist focuses their practice on providing dental care for patients under the age of 18. This gives them advanced knowledge and expertise in the unique dental needs of children, including interceptive orthodontics to influence healthy jaw development and preventive care to keep teeth and gums healthy. We offer patient, gentle care and use specialized tools for little teeth to make getting dental care a comfortable, trauma-free experience for our young patients.

What age should a child start going to the dentist?

It’s recommended that children first see the dentist within six months of the eruption of their first tooth or by the age of 12 months. Our Sebastian area pediatric dental office provides complimentary new patient exams for kids under the age of two.

How often should a child see a dentist?

Just like adults, children need to see the dentist every six months for dental cleanings and comprehensive evaluations. Not only is this one of the most effective ways to prevent tooth decay, it also gets children used to regular dental visits so they know what to expect and understand that these appointments are essential for healthy teeth and gums.

What sedation is used for pediatric dentistry?

We offer a safe form of pediatric dental sedation called nitrous oxide, which you might also know as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide is easy to administer, takes effect quickly, and wears off just as fast. It allows children to relax, while still remaining responsive and alert. That said, we do like to perform work without sedation first if possible, but if you have concerns about your child’s ability to tolerate their dental procedure, please let us know.

What happens if you don’t fix cavities in baby teeth?

Untreated cavities can cause pain that interferes with eating, leave a tooth susceptible to breakage, compromise your child’s oral health, and cause embarrassment, which is why it’s important to take tooth decay seriously, even in baby teeth. Restorative dentistry services for cavities include composite fillings and dental crowns, but tooth extractions may be needed if a tooth cannot be saved.
