Dental crowns are used whenever a tooth has more decay or damage than we can repair with a dental filling. Rather than extracting the tooth and having to replace it with a space maintainer or permanent restoration, a crown allows us to save much of your child’s natural tooth, which is the best possible outcome for their oral health. Crowns restore strength and function to a compromised tooth and when tooth-colored materials are chosen, they also restore the appearance of their smile.
The Pediatric Dental Crown Process
The process of getting dental crowns involves two separate appointments. During the first visit, your child’s tooth is prepared for their crown. An impression is taken so we can match the shape and size of your child’s tooth. Next, the tooth and area surrounding it are numbed and the decayed or damaged tooth structure is carefully removed, leaving the healthy tooth structure intact. Another impression is taken, then a temporary crown is placed on the tooth to protect it.
We use the two impressions to design a crown just for your child in your choice of material: stainless steel, composite, polycarbonate, resin, porcelain, or zirconia. Porcelain and zirconia are often used for permanent teeth, while less expensive options are a good choice for a baby tooth. Once the dental laboratory has finished fabricating the crown, your child will come in for their second appointment, when we bond the crown permanently in place.
